CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) is an ignition system widely used in gasoline engines, especially in motorcycles and racing vehicles that require high ignition precision. The CDI system works by storing electrical energy in a capacitor and releasing it rapidly to the spark plug, creating a powerful and sharp spark. This process ensures faster, stronger, and more accurate ignition compared to traditional ignition systems.

The CDI system was first developed during the 1960s–1970s to solve ignition instability issues in high-rev engines — a major limitation of coil and condenser ignition systems used at the time. Leading companies from Japan and Europe, such as Bosch, Yamaha, and Mitsubishi, pioneered CDI technology and introduced it into professional racing engines. Because of its ability to deliver stronger sparks, faster response, and higher heat resistance, CDI quickly became the standard for high-performance engines.
